IM000872.JPGMike Heusner, Marguerite Miles and Misha Miles, the owners, managers and hosts at Belize River Lodge have so graciously hosted me and my staff going on 5 years now.  Each stay at the BLR has been more memorable than the previous one.  I have learned so much about salt water fly fishing from their expert guides, the cultures of the Belizean people and the wonder of the Belize River.  It is a destination that I truly enjoy returning to.  During this trip I was able to hook up with three 100 pound plus Tarpon in the same afternoon and to make it even more special, I landed two of them!  One was 142lbs and the other was 125lbs!  They say that if a fly fisherman lands 1 out of 6 tarpon he is doing great, so my day was awesome!

IMG_2250I have been hunting in western Kansas for over 20 years for pheasants and white tail deer.  Over the years, I have grown to love the wild nature of the ring necked pheasant and the huge white tail deer that roam the vast farm lands of Kansas.  This past year I was invited to spend some time with Jerry and Laurie Hull from Sand Wells Outdoors.  During my stay at their beautiful lodge, we hunted for Whitetail Deer, Ringneck Pheasant and something new to me, Coyotes!

IM001001.JPGThis week I am back in Brush Valley, Pennsylvania for a “Cast & Blast”.  This has become an annual event and I look forward to it each year.  Steve Renosky from the Yellow Creek Trout Club www.yellowcreektroutinc.com and Nathan McNutt from The Woodcrest Point Hunting Preserve www.woodcrestpoint.com  hosted the event once again.  This year Steve, Nate and myself donated our time, money and resources for this event to support the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).  Ken Rogg, Ryan Krischke, Paul Culley and Greg Hill were the auction winners and spent the weekend hunting and fishing.  As an added treat my special guest for the show was 4 time Super Bowl Champion, former Pittsburgh Steeler, Randy Grossman.  After the pheasant hunt we took the short 10 minute drive to the Yellow Creek Trout Club for some great trophy trout action. Host Steve Renosky and expert fisherman and club member, Woody Banks treated me to a great day of fishing.  A great time was had by all.

IM000665.JPGDave Allbaugh a Pennsylvania native has been fly fishing since he was a kid. His techniques have gone back in time to the original method of fly fishing. The “Wet Fly” pattern has been a lost art however; Dave has taken it upon himself to revive it. Wet Fly Waterguides specialize in this type of fishing. He designs and ties his own flies to adapt to the various Pennsylvania streams that he fishes.

IM000164.JPGSeptember in Canada’s Northwest Territories us usually synonymous with Big Game Hunting, not fishing. Although I spent 6 days in the Territories after the third day I had already bagged my two Caribou. This left me some time to get out the Fly Rod and catch some Lake Trout on Lac De Gras. The water is frozen for 9 months during the year, so the window for fishing is quite limited.  With Guides Larry Gardiner and Ken Weber we braved the cold temperatures and took a 35 mile boat ride in a 16” aluminum boat for these sought after trophies.

Maryland 2009 069For almost ten years, FLYBY Island Outfitters in Trappe, Maryland has provided me with some of the finest waterfowl hunting in the United States.  Each year millions of birds migrate through Maryland’s coveted Eastern Shore to their wintering grounds further south and we are always there to harvest a few.  With guide Richie Dulan and some good friends, we hunkered down for two days of Goose hunting the way it used to be.  Two limits in two mornings!  Cooking on the Wildside this week will feature a Pineapple and Green Pepper Goose Stew.

Panama 2009 066Traveling to Central America for Big Game Fish has become increasingly popular for the trophy fisherman.  The deep blue waters and calm swells of the Pacific Ocean offer some of the finest sport fishing in the world!  I had the pleasure of traveling to Panama to fish with the folks at the Hooked on Panama Lodge.  From the time we arrived in Panama City to the minute we left, service, service, service was the name of the game.  This week we went after the beautiful Dorado or more commonly known as Mahi-Mahi.  Our day was full of excitement and nothing short of spectacular as we filled the cooler with these wonderful tasting fish.  To make things even better, I got to fish with some old friends who also visited the lodge.  Cooking on the Wildside was a treat as I learned how to make a Mahi Ceviche!  Make sure you join me for this one!
